Your Rights at Work in Australia

All people working in Australia, including international students, have workplace rights and protections. These rights are enforced by Australian law and cannot be changed or removed by your employer.

Workplace Rights and Pay: The Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) is a free government service that provides information and assistance on pay rates, working hours, leave entitlements, and resolving workplace issues.

Visit their dedicated page for visa holders and international students, which includes resources in multiple languages.

You can also call the FWO within Australia on 13 13 94. For language assistance, use the Translating and Interpreting Service at 13 14 50.

National Minimum Wage: To ensure you are being paid correctly, you can use the official Pay and Conditions Tool.

You can calculate your correct pay and entitlements using the Pay and Conditions Tool at www.fairwork.gov.au/pay

Tax File Number (TFN): To work and get paid in Australia, you must apply for a Tax File Number (TFN) from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).

You can apply for your TFN online via the ATO website.

Your Safety and Wellbeing

Your personal safety is a priority. We encourage you to familiarise yourself with the support services available.

Family Safety Pack: The Australian Government provides important information regarding Australia’s laws on domestic and family violence, sexual assault, and forced marriage.

Character Requirements: As a visa holder, you must obey all Australian laws. Your visa may be at risk if you engage in criminal activity.
